Fandry Receiving Great Applause in IFFI 2013

Fandry means “pig”, but that definition only emerges towards the end of the film.

Debutante director Nagraj Manjule’s Marathi movie ‘Fandry‘ is receiving great applause in the 44th International film festival of India (Iffi) in Panaji, with  the classy ambience. Fandry also receive the Jury Grand Prize for the 2nd best film in International Competition at the 15th edition of Mumbai Film Festival held on 1st Nov 2013.

Plot/Story

Jabya (Somnath Avghade) and his family come from the Kaikadi tribe, a traditionally nomadic people considered “Dalit,”or untouchable. Jabya’s father, Kacharu (Kishor Kadam), is "allowed" to touch the unclean pigs. Jabya is a handsome, laughing young teenager who has a complex about his looks, his clothes, and of course his family. All these things keep him from expressing his tender feelings to Shalu (Rajshree Kharat), a fair-skinned girl in his class from a higher caste family.

Jabya is befriended by a sympathetic local shopkeeper. He’s been told that you can hypnotize a person by throwing black sparrow ashes on them, and he’s keen to try it out on the unattainable Shalu. Together with friend Piraji (Suraj Pawar), Jabya tries to capture a mythical black sparrow. The film also stands out because of its final 15 minutes. The final shot of a pig chase through the village brings the film’s underlying tension to a boil and a final explosion.
