Marathi film screening order needs to be fine-tuned

Observing that the quality of Marathi films has improved in the last five years, the Bombay high court on Tuesday said a government circular making it compulsory for single-screen theatres to exhibit 112 shows of Marathi movies annually has to be fine-tuned.

A division bench of Justice V M Kanade and Justice M S Sonak heard a petition by the Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association challenging the February 2010 circular. In an earlier round of litigation, the association had challenged a 1968 government resolution that mandated compulsory release for exhibition of Marathi films for not less than four weeks in a year.

The associations senior counsel,Vineet Naik, said there are not enough Marathi films being produced and theatres are not being booked.

It is also location-centric.If the location is Regal no one will come to see the film. But if it is Bharatmata there will be a sizeable crowd, he said, adding that single screens cannot meets the costs of electricity and air-conditioning.The judges questioned if the circular can make screening compulsory.Justice Kanade said,The circular needs to be finetuned.
