Varsha Usgaonkar In Property Dispute With Sister-In-Law

Actress Varsha Usgaonkar, married to the son of late music director Ravi for the last 13 years, has been accused by her sisters-in-law of harassment, and illegally occupying their father's bungalow in Santacruz (W).

The ground-plus-one storey bungalow at 14, Mira Baugh Colony is occupied by Usgaonkar, her husband Ajay, her sisters-in-law Chhaya Ojha and Veena Upadhyaya, and their families.

After Ravi's death in March last year, Chhaya and Veena claimed ownership to the entire bungalow, leading to bitter arguments, police complaints, and a case being filed in the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate's Court last month.

The court drew up a compromise, wherein Chhaya, Veena and their families occupied the ground floor, besides a hall and a bedroom on the first floor, while Usgaonkar and her husband have been allowed access to a small room on the first floor, a bedroom, and a small passage that has been converted into a kitchen.

Both parties have been asked by the court to not step into the other's territory, following which they installed CCTV cameras in the house to prevent 'encroachment'.

On October 15, Chhaya approached the Bandra court alleging harassment. Earlier, she had also approached police saying Usgaonkar's domestic had thrashed her at the actress' behest.

"They were carrying out alterations to the property and when I demanded to know what was going on, their domestic help pushed me. Even our father, who built this house, was not allowed to access his own home. They are trying to take over the property," Chhaya alleged.

She and her sister produced a will, saying it was drawn up by Ravi after he had cut off all ties with his son and daughter-in-law. The will says: "My son Ajay has never helped me in any manner. On the contrary, he has harassed and tortured me. The behaviour of my son worsened after he got married to Varsha, who happens to be a film actress. It is my sincere desire that my son Ajay should not touch my body, nor should he attend my funeral."

While the will is under probate, the court accepted Usgaonkar and her husband's plea that they shouldn't be asked to vacate the house till the will is carried out.

The court has asked Usgaonkar to reply to the allegations, after Chhaya submitted the CCTV camera footage to prove she had been pushed by her domestic help. The actress and her husband remained unavailable for comment.
