5 Reasons To Watch Lokmanya

Lokmanya Tilak
Tilak's life has been a subject of great interest. His Swadeshi movement attracted thousands of youngsters to join the Indian freedom struggle. His ideas about national integration and education helped start the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav and the Deccan Education Society respectively.

Subodh Bhave
He has not only looked the part but his command on the body language and enunciation of the character is worth appreciating. There was a lot of buzz around his look in the film and the makers had kept it a secret until last month when Subodh’s look was revealed at the iconic Shaniwarwada in Pune.

The Pune connect
Apart from the unveiling of the look, Pune was where Tilak spent his lifetime. The Kesari Wada, Vishrambaug Wada, Vithhal Mandir and Ganeshkhind all plays very significant role in the freedom struggle and all have links with Tilak. A true Punekar will not miss this experience.

The costume and art
The film has 4 strong points; a visionary leader, a well researched story, Subodh’s acting and the costumes and art departments. Vikram Gaikwad has worked on Subodh’s look while Mahesh Sherla on the costumes of the cast. Add Santosh Phutane’s art direction and you have a perfectly recreated pre-independence era Pune.

Story
The story is a very specific and well-researched piece of work. It has all the minute details of Tilak’s work, his stay at Mandalay, his interpretation of the Bhagvad Gita and more. His friendship with social reformer Gopal Ganesh Agarkar finds a special place in the film and so do the scathing editorials that he used to write for Kesari and Maratha.
