Marathi Actresses Aspire To Be New Style Icons

Marathi Actresses Aspire To Be New Style Icons
Marathi cinema is getting a makeover. Producers are now hiring designers to style their heroines in keeping with the latest trends. Says Ajay Sarpotdar, chairman of the Marathi Film Mahamandal, "We are seriously working on the styling of our heroines. The main reason for this is to bring in the younger generation that needs to identify with our cinema. We want to create style icons like the ones in Hindi cinema. That way, the Marathi youth will be able to identify with the stars on the Marathi screen".

Actress Shweta Mehendale is shooting for Sachin Goswami's film. "Most Marathi film heroines are convent-educated and extremely fashion conscious", she says. "Producers have also started taking an interest in the look of the film and are making it contemporary. From a time when the producer's wife took on the mantle of stylist, we have moved to a day and age when professional stylists are hired for the heroine", Mendale adds. She also reveals that with high-fashion stores coming to the mall next door, Marathi film designers have no dearth of ideas to pick and choose from.

From the traditional nine-yard sari to the contemporary six-yard wonder and even salwar-kurtas, the fashion journey of the Marathi heroine has been through many phases. In it's current avatar, the Marathi film heroine dons jeans, short skirts and tube tops.

Actress Kishori Shahane says that the concept of designers came into the Marathi film industry less than two years ago."Look at the heroine of Mee Shivaji Raje Boltoy and my film Ek Daav Dhobi Pachaad. They are very smartly attired. Our heroines are getting fashion conscious and trying to be in tune with the times. But unlike Hindi films, there is no skin show,'' she adds.

Most Marathi film-makers want their heroines to give Bipasha Basu and Katrina Kaif a run for their money and have begun wooing Marathi-speaking actors from television serials. "We want more glamour in our cinema. In terms of content we are much better than Hindi films. In a few years, we will also be as glamourous as them".

Even the content of Marathi cinema is changing and exploring contemporary subjects. Fashion designer Kirti Sawant is currently working on a teleserial based on college life. "The director's brief to us is that nothing that is typical of Marathi films should be seen in the serial. Our content has to be on a par with Hindi films or serials", she says.
